The holiday season features a day of Irish culture, including music, storytelling, dance, art, hand-made Irish quilts and stockings, Irish Christmas cakes, pudding and more. Held in the Bowers Museum outdoor Key Courtyard, this cultural celebration lets visitors shop from distinctive vendors who offer handcrafted goods.
Historically, Celtic storytellers (seanchaí) were very important people; they preserved history thru their stories. Bairbre McCarthy carries on that oral tradition. With stories of ancient kings, fairy folk and historical heroes, she blends ancient legend with early Celtic history. McCarthy is from County Clare on Ireland’s west coast. Storytelling will be from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m.
Marvelous musicians Bella Issakova (fiddle), Preston Howard, Zac Leger (fiddle, uilleann pipes, guitar) and Felim Egan (button accordion) plus Kevin Horton, formerly with Riverdance – now part of the Kerry Dance Troupe – will perform from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.
There will also be a performance by Irish button accordion genius David Munnelly. He toured with The Chieftains and currently plays with the David Munnelly Band, one of the hottest bands on the international traditional Celtic music scene. Based in County Mayo, Munnelly and his brother Kieran Munnelly are amazing the world with their unique style of playing.
Also performing will be harpist Slugger O’Toole, Christmas carolers, and roving musicians.
The following vendors will also be available:
1. Irish Import Shop, the No. 1 Irish shop in Southern California with a second shop in San Diego.
2. Myths & Legends Photography, specializing in iconic images of Ireland, Scotland & Wales.
